incompleteGender modality refers to the correspondence (or lack thereof) between one's assigned gender at birth and ones actual gender and/or gender presentation. The two primary, and most well known gender modalities are cisgender and transgender. However, those are not the only possible relations for one to have. Gender modality is an open-ended category which welcomes the elaboration of further terms.
History
Gender modality was a term created by Florence Ashley, a transfeminine jurist and bioethicist, some time around February 28, 2019. The term was coined because Ashley noted that the notion of ‘gender identity’ as used in law, perpetuates the idea that ‘gender identity’ is something only used by trans people (whereas cis people would just have 'gender'). Ashley traces this misuse of the term gender identity to fact that a conceptual category such as gender modality was not available when policymakers attempt to speak of discrimination against trans people by virtue of being not cis.

The benefits of using gender modality as a concept include:
#Moves away from the othering nature of using the term "gender identity" when trans people are the sole intended subjects, which normalizes terminology that describes non-LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ+ people as equals.
#Enhances our vocabulary when discussing the various aspects of gender (e.g. gender assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, and now gender modality).
#Resolves controversies surrounding appropriate terminology when referring to the fact of being trans, with terms such as “transsexuality”, “transgenderism”.
#Opens the door to gender modalities outside of a cis/trans binary, by enabling us to talk about ones “gender modality” instead of one “being cis or trans” (in the same way that “sexual/romantic orientation” gives us conceptual tools to avoid reproducing a “straight/gay” binary).
Ashley advocates for the usage of gender modality in the WPATH Standards of Care version 8 and has wrote several essays on the topic of gender modality.
Abigender (pronounced ah-bye-gender or ay-bye-gender), also spelled Abbigender, is a gender identity under the Multigender, Nonbinary, and Transgender umbrella terms. Abigender people have two distinct and separate gender identities, however only feel a loose or vague connection to both gender identities and also do not feel that any part of their gender is "neutral" or "neither". The two genders may be static or fluid, with the latter being a type of genderfluid. Abigender people usually identify with the female and male binary genders, though some identify with a different pair of genders, such as demigirl and maverique.

Abigender is similar to bigender, though rather than feeling as though an individual is wholly two genders, abigender people only feel a connection to two genders, rather than fully being either gender.

<br />

Origin
The term abigender comes from Latin ad-, meaning "in relation to", and bi-, meaning "two", in relation to two genders. This is because abigender people feel a connection to two genders, but do not identify fully with either gender. Rather, it's more accurate to say an abigender identity is related to two genders, but not wholly.

It was coined by Instagram user Rainii Alec in the fall of 2020, who also created the original flags consisting of pastel blues and pinks with a dark purple stripe in the middle. Alec created the term after feeling like no currently existing gender labels at the time fit how they experience their gender.

Like ambigender, abigender is a more specific kind of multigender identity and a sister identity to bigender. If the gender identities fluctuate or are fluid, it can also fall under the genderflux, genderfluid, or fluidflux umbrellas as well. It is also possible for someone to fluctuate between abigender and bigender, depending on the intensity of their gender identity/identities.

<br />

Flags
Abigender has a few different flags, including:<gallery mode="nolines" widths="150" heights="83">
Specific Kinds of Abigender Identities
* Abiflux, in which a person has two distinct gender identities which fluctuate in intensity over time and are at times vague. This includes fluctuating between abigender and bigender.
* Abifluid, in which a person has two distinct but vague gender identities which they experience at different times. (See: Genderfluid)
*Abifemme, in which a person has two distinct but vague feminine gender identities (ex. female and antiboy)
*Abimasc, in which a person has two distinct but vague masculine gender identities (ex. proxvir and demiboy)
