Em 1997, um artigo sobre o "continuum do género" no Jornal Internacional do Transgenerismo constatou que "uma pessoa que se sente ou age como ambos uma mulher e um homem poderá identificar-se como bigénero." O artigo também descreveu indivíduos que eram "géneromisto" (genderblended em inglês), sendo ambos os géneros binários mas ou "mais homem que mulher" ou "mais mulher que homem".[1]
