A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a persistent identifier used to uniquely identify objects, such as academic, professional, and governmental information. It provides a permanent and reliable link to a piece of content, standardising the way online resources are referenced and ensuring that a publication can always be found. A DOI is an implementation of the Handle System, and its use is widespread in academic journals, research reports, data sets, and other official publications. The system was initiated in 1997 and has been developed and implemented across various publishing applications, with the International DOI Foundation (IDF) managing the system and its standardisation through the International Standards Organisation. By providing a stable link, the DOI system helps to resolve issues caused by a change in a digital object's location or the website it is hosted on, making it a critical tool in preservation of digital scholarly records.
