Family names

Traditionally, many Icelandic family names specify the person as being either male or female using the suffixes -son ("son") or -dóttir ("daughter"). Some nonbinary people change their surname to end in -bur or -barn, meaning "offspring" or "child". Alternatively, they may choose to drop the suffix altogether (for example, "Steinars" instead of "Steinarsson"/"Steinarsdóttir"/"Steinarsbur"). Currently, changing to a gender-neutral family name is only allowed for people who have their gender registered as "X".
