Uterine ablation is a minimally invasive procedure in which an implement is used by a gynecologist to cauterize the inner lining of the uterus. After ablation, most people do not continue to menstruate or have extremely minimal "spotting" during menstruation for a long period of time or permanently. It is typically performed as a day surgery in an operating room, and the patient is typically put under "twilight" sedation. It is generally not painful; however, some soreness and residual spotting can occur. The procedure is often considered elective since it causes the cessation of menstruation, but in some cases might be deemed medically necessary such as for the treatment of endometriosis or some other health concerns. People typically cannot get pregnant after ablation since a new lining cannot grow; however, pregnancy has occured in rare cases.
