Pan gender can be many things depending on the person. The "pan-" prefix means "all" and comes from the ancient Greek word pan. It is used in English words to indicate "all," "every," or "whole." Pangender is a gender identity where a person identifies with many or all genders. This can mean experiencing all genders at once, fluctuating between many genders, or feeling a single, all-encompassing gender that encompasses countless others. It is a non-binary identity that is not limited to the man/woman binary.

The term "pangender" originated from the Greek prefix "pan-," meaning "all," combined with "gender". Its earliest known use was in 1992 in a book preface, but it gained prominence in online communities and mainstream discussions starting in the 1990s and 2010s, respectively, with the growth of awareness for non-binary and other gender identities
