This list, in alphabetical order, lists banks, building societies, and similar institutions in the UK whose status on genderqueer and nonbinary identity acceptance is known. Edits should, where possible, link to evidence.

American Express

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes; Mx.
• Do they allow no title? Unknown.
• Evidence:

• Do they allow no title? Unknown. Title is required online but free text input.

Barclaycard

Please note that Barclays and Barclaycard are separate (sister) companies and have separate systems.

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes; Mx. Another title must be selected when opening an account, but it can be overridden during an in-person appointment at a Barclays branch.
• Do they allow no title? Unknown. A card can be issued without a title.
• Evidence:
  • Own experience following opening an account in late 2025.

Barclays Bank

Please note that Barclays and Barclaycard are separate (sister) companies and have separate systems.

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes, in some ways via manual override.
• Do they allow no title? Yes.
• Evidence:
  • (No title) Blogged comment that a card from Barclays has no title on it, April 2013.
  • Nonbinary.org contributor spoke with an individual in-branch and updated their name and title. Barclays system cannot accept Mx as a title, however, a gendered title can be selected and then overridden; the new title can be printed on all documentation and chequebooks manually. Barclays are working on accepting Mx as a title officially.

Chase

Accounts with this bank are only available through a mobile app.

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Unknown, as they do not ask.
• Do they allow no title? Yes, this is the default.
• Evidence:
  • Recieved titleless card in July 2022.
• Notes
  • They also allow customising how a name appears on the card (to a certain degree) (e.g. John Doe/J Doe/John D)

Co-op Bank

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Mx (partially).
• Notes:
  • Their online sign up for new customers allows Mx, but several reports of both new customers using the sign up and existing customers changing titles only to be told they can't actually process the Mx title on their system.
  • "It may interest you to know I've had trouble with the Co-op bank using Mx consistently / They put it on my statements and cards but call me "miss" when I phone and on Internet banking. I've asked them to / change it several times but they won't." Tweets, May 2015: 1, 2, 3
  • Phone conversation June 2015 clarified that they can put Mx on cards but it is not one of the permitted titles for customer details, so statements and other correspondence still bear a gendered title.
  • August 2021: Mx on both card and statement by simple request in letter (phone lines too busy). Can't be done in branch. Received correctly addressed letter confirming change.

Coventry Building Society

Halifax

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes, online - If you click on other, a text box is given (unsure about other methods).
• Do they allow no title? Yes, on debit cards only
• Evidence:
  • In branch conversation. I was offered a choice of titles from the gender they perceived me to be. I do not however hold a cash card or cheque book there so I cannot comment if they offer no-title or neutral titles on those items. I continue to receive mis-titled letters from them, even after a series of complaints.
• Notes:
  • April 2011: Halifax have publicly stated they can offer gender-neutral options on Twitter.
  • Feb 2015: Halifax will remove title from cards only, but account will still have gendered title. Mx and other inclusive titles unavailable. Source.
  • Feb 2019: Credit card applied for online, received with Mx (written through the Other option).

HSBC

• Do they allow no title? Unknown.
• Evidence:
  • Website stating Mx and M are offered as titles.
• Notes:
  • Mx and M are not available when registering online, though it is possible to change to them once the account is open.

Lloyds Bank

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes; Mx.
• Do they allow no title? Unknown.
• Evidence:
  • Mx listed as an option when registering for an account online.
• Notes:
  • Free text entry for title when registering online, other titles presumably possible.
  • Non-binary permitted as a gender option when registering, but should be 'as shown on your passport/ID'.
  • Reddit post from a trans person saying that Lloyds require deed poll documents to be signed by a solicitor, which is both unnecessary and costly. (Sept 2014)
  • Possible that the above rule is no longer the case, website doesn't specify that the deed poll needs to be enrolled or signed by a solicitor.

Metro Bank

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes; Mx.
• Do they allow no title? Yes (on cards).
• Evidence:

• Notes:
  • You can also specify your gender as "nonbinary" in your account profile. This and the Mx title option are available internally to employees of the bank as well.

• Do they allow no title? Yes, this is the default.
• Evidence:
  • Titles are not requested during registration.
• Notes:
  • Monzo has separate options for changes of preferred name and legal name. All contact is via app / online help chat.

Nationwide Building Society

• Do they allow any gender neutral titles? Yes; Mx.
• Do they allow no title? Partially. You can request a card without a title, but post/e-mails will still have a title.
• Evidence:
  • Nationwide website detailing acceptance of Mx.
  • Card with Mx received in post and account title changed, September 2020.
  • A call to action for the lack of gender-inclusive standard title, with info on ways to easily give feedback. The more voices, the faster the change.

• Notes:
  • A title change to Mx can be made by going into branch once the account is open, or by post. No evidence is required for this.
