Nex Benedict (January 11, 2008 - February 8, 2024) was a nonbinary and genderfluid adolescent who died at age 16 the day after a group of students picked a fight with them in their school bathroom.[1]
Nex, who used they/them pronouns, was a student at Owasso High School in Owasso, Oklahoma. They were a member of the Choktaw nation, and lived on Cherokee reservation land (where their high school is also located).[2]
Nex's grandmother, Sue, reports that Nex "was a straight-A student who enjoyed drawing, loved to read, played the video games Ark and Minecraft and loved their cat Zeus."[3]
On 21 February 2024, Owasso police stated that Nex "did not die as a result of trauma", but this statement has been questioned by some journalists.<ref name="Riedel">[3] Regardless of how accurate that is, Nex's death has brought additional media attention to anti-trans sentiments gaining popularity across America in recent years.[2]
