    • Read, edit, or use the Nonbinary Wiki without registering an account.
    • Register an account without providing an email address or other personal information.

Because we want to understand how the Wiki is used so we can make it better for you, we collect some information when you:

    • Read or edit the Nonbinary Wiki.
    • Register an account.
    • Send us emails or participate in a survey.

    We promise to:

    • Be transparent about how your information is used or shared in this Privacy Policy.
    • Use reasonable measures to keep your information secure.
    • Never sell or share your private information with third parties for marketing purposes.
    • Only share your information under limited circumstances, such as to comply with the law or to protect you and others.

    Be aware that:

    • Any content that you add or change on the Nonbinary Wiki will be publicly and permanently available.
    • If you contribute to the Wiki without logging in, your contributions will be publicly and permanently attributed to the IP address used at the time rather than a username.
    • If you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, you may not use the Nonbinary Wiki.

    Contact information

If you have questions or suggestions about this Privacy Policy or the information collected under this Policy, please email us at [email protected]. Introduction

    Welcome!

The Nonbinary Wiki is a free resource completely written and managed by volunteers and funded by donations, based on the principles of wiki philosophy: together, we can do more than anyone can do alone. For this reason, we cannot work without gathering and sharing some information about our users. Because we are committed to transparency, this Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and share user information. By using the Wiki, you agree to and accept this Policy.

We may modify this Privacy Policy in the future (see section 9). Because this is a collaborative project, you are welcome to leave feedback and propose changes to this Policy by leaving a comment on the Talk Page.

    Definitions

To make this Policy easier to understand, here are some definitions:

    • "the Nonbinary Wiki" / "the Wiki": The wiki itself, accessible through the nonbinary.wiki domain, including APIs, emails, and notifications.
    • "the Nonbinary Wiki Project" / "the Project" / we" / "us" / "our": The organization that operates the Nonbinary Wiki, including the volunteer staff and the technical infrastructure.
    • "you" / "your": You, the reader of this policy, regardless of whether you are an individual, group, or organization.
    • "contributions": Content you add or changes you make on the Nonbinary Wiki.
    • "Personal Information": Information you provide us or information we collect that could be used to identify you. While we do not actively collect most of these types of information, we consider at least the following to be personal information if it is not public and can be used to identify you:
      • (a) your real name, address, phone number, email address, password, identification number on a government-issued ID, IP address, user-agent information, bank details;
      • (b) when in association with one of the items in subsection (a), any sensitive data such as date of birth, gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, racial or ethnic origins, marital or familial status, medical conditions or disabilities, political affiliation, and religion.
    • "third party" / "third parties": Individuals, entities, websites, services, products, and applications that are not controlled, managed, or operated by the Nonbinary Wiki Project. This includes users of the Nonbinary Wiki and projects that may depend on the Wiki but are not operated by us, such as the Discord server and our Ko-Fi page.

    Scope

This Policy applies to the Nonbinary Wiki site, including APIs, emails, notifications, and other services directly managed by us to the extent that they interact with the Wiki.

Examples of services not covered by this Policy are third-party platforms such as search engines and services we use but don't operate, such as our Discord server and Ko-Fi page. These sites are governed by their own Privacy Policies.

    1. Information collected by the Nonbinary Wiki Project

    1.1 Your public contributions

When you make a contribution to the Nonbinary Wiki, including on user or talk pages, you are creating a public, permanent record of every piece of content added, removed, or altered by you. Your contributions are immediately published upon saving and may appear in search results and other third-party services. The page history will keep a log of when your contribution or deletion was made, as well as your username (if you are signed in) or your IP address (if you are not signed in).

Unless this Policy says otherwise, you should assume that information that you contribute to the Wiki is publicly visible and can be found by search engines.

    1.2 Account information

You are not required to create an account to read or contribute to the Nonbinary Wiki, except under rare circumstances. However, if you contribute without signing in, your contributions will be publicly attributed to the IP address associated with your device.

If you want to create an account, we require only a username and password. Your email address, if you choose to provide it, will remain private unless you choose to post it on public-facing portions of the Wiki, such as your user page. When you create an account, we still collect your IP address, but it is not shared publicly.

Once created, an account can't be completely removed, as we are required by the Creative Commons license contract to irrevocably attribute your contributions to you. However, we can help you hide or delete other personal information tied to the account, including changing the username to anonymize it and disabling the account.

    1.3 Self-submitted user information

As a registered user, you may choose to share more details about yourself on your user page. Please use discretion on what you choose to post on public-facing portions of the Wiki, as it will be available to the public and may show up in search results of third-party engines. You are responsible for any private information you choose to publish on the wiki.

    1.4 Automatically collected information

Because of how web browsers work, we receive some information automatically when you visit the Wiki. Depending on your browser settings, this information may include:

    • The type of device you are using.
    • The type and version of your browser, as well as its language preference.
    • The type and version of your device's operating system.
    • The website that referred you to the Wiki.
    • Which pages you request and visit, as well as the date and time of each request.

    1.5 Usage information

The Nonbinary Wiki Project actively collects certain usage data using cookies. We use this information for statistical purposes to help administer, manage, and improve the Wiki, as well as to prevent abuse, analyze trends, and tailor your user experience. This includes maintaining your login status and remembering whether you have already seen the cookie warning or not.

In addition, we may use anonymized and aggregated usage statistics that may be derived from this information for marketing, research, or reporting purposes. If published, these statistics will never include personal information.

We honor Do Not Track signals and do not collect analytics data from users who have enabled this feature on their browser.

1.6 IP Address and other metadata

Contributions made by unregistered users will be publicly identified by that user's IP Address. If you upload an image to the Nonbinary Wiki, the image may include location and time metadata, depending on the configuration of your device.

Additionally, we always collect your IP address and store it in private.

    2. Protection

2.1 Protection of the data we store

We strive to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. However, there's no such thing as completely secure data transmission or storage, so we can't guarantee that our security will not be breached.

Note that we will never ask for your password by email (but we may send you a temporary password if you have requested a password reset). If you ever receive an email that requests your password, please let us know by forwarding it to [email protected].

    2.2 Data Archiving

Once we receive personal information from you, we keep it for the shortest possible time consistent with the maintenance, understanding, and improvement of the Project and our obligations under applicable law. In most instances, private personal information is deleted, aggregated, or de-identified after 90 days. Non-personal information, such as your contributions to the Wiki, may be retained indefinitely as appropriate for the proper operation of the Project.

If you have an account, your email address is stored until you change your account settings. If you make contributions without logging into an account, your IP address will be generally stored and made public indefinitely. The transparency of the project's contribution and revision histories is critical to its efficacy and overall mission.

    3. Email communications

3.1 Automated emails and official communications

The Nonbinary Wiki Project may send you emails containing Wiki-related news or information. You may also receive notification emails from us to inform you of relevant changes to the Wiki. You will also receive emails related to your use of the Wiki, such as password recovery emails. You can control which emails you want to receive from your Preferences page.

    3.2 Communication between users

In addition to automated messages sent by the Wiki, users with verified email addresses may communicate with each other through email. By default, if you have a verified email address, other users may use a special page ("EmailUser") to send messages to you and vice versa.

When you use EmailUser to send a message, we will send an email to the recipient of your choice which includes your email address and the content you chose to send. Your email address is not revealed when other users contact you. EmailUser functionality may be enabled or disabled on the Preferences page.

    4. When do we share your information?

    4.1 With your permission

We may share your information for any particular purpose if you agree to it, provided you are made aware of the entire scope of the purpose.

4.2 When you make it public

Any information you post publicly on the Nonbinary Wiki is public. For example, if you add your email address to your user page, it will be public and not protected by this Policy. If you edit without registering or logging into your account, your IP address will be seen publicly.

While we will help with removing your private information from the site at your request, you are responsible for your usage of the Wiki. Please think carefully about your desired level of anonymity before you disclose personal information in a public space.

    4.3 For legal reasons

We may share private information when we believe with reasonable certainty that release is necessary to comply with a court order, an applicable law, a subpoena from a third party, or other types of judicial or administrative orders.

Nothing in this Privacy Policy is intended to limit any legal objections or defenses you may have to a third party's request (whether it be civil, criminal, or governmental) to disclose your personal information. We recommend seeking the advice of legal counsel immediately if such a request is made involving you.

4.4 To protect you, ourselves, and others

We need to use and share your personal information if we reasonably believe it to be necessary to enforce or investigate potential violations of this Private Policy or any other official policy of the Project. We may also need to access and share personal information to investigate and defend ourselves against legal threats or actions.

The Nonbinary Wiki is a collaborative site, managed by volunteers who hold certain administrative rights. These rights may include access to limited amounts of otherwise nonpublic information about recent contributions and activity by other users. We use this information to help protect against vandalism and abuse, fight harassment of other users, and minimize disruptive behavior on the Wiki.

We hope that this never comes up, but we may disclose your personal information if we believe that it's reasonably necessary to prevent imminent and serious bodily harm or death to a person or to protect our organization, volunteers, users, or the public. We may also disclose your personal information if we reasonably believe it necessary to detect, prevent, or otherwise assess and address potential spam, malware, fraud, abuse, unlawful activity, and security or technical concerns.

    4.5 For data analysis

We may use, transfer, and share aggregated, anonymous data derived from private information with researchers, journalists, and other third parties that we choose to work with. This data will never include any personally identifiable information.

    4.6 For third-party content on-site

In order to pursue our mission, we may allow access to third-party services as a result of you utilizing the site. Currently, the only third-party site to which information may be transmitted, depending on your configuration, is www.youtube.com (only when visiting a page with an embedded video).

    4.7 Transfer or acquisition

In the unlikely event the ownership of the Project is transferred to, or acquired by another organization, we will transfer any necessary information in our possession to the other organization as part of the transfer process.

    5. Children

We do not operate any service targeted at people under 13 years of age. If you are a parent or guardian and become aware that your child has registered an account to the Wiki without your permission, please let us know and we will remove your child's information.

    6. Transfer of information across borders

The Nonbinary Wiki Project has its servers in Quebec, Canada. If you decide to use the Nonbinary Wiki, whether from inside or outside Canada, you understand that your personal information will be collected, transferred, stored, processed, and used in Canada as described in this Privacy Policy. You also understand that your information may be transferred by us from Canada to other countries, which may have different or less stringent data protection laws than your country, in connection with providing services to you. By using the Wiki, you consent to any such transfer of your information.

    7. Copies, amendments, and erasure of personal information

    7.1 Copies and amendments

You have a right to a digital copy of all personal information stored about you by us. You also have the right that we correct any personal information that we have collected or display on the Wiki.

    7.2 Data erasure

Additionally, you have the right to request the erasure of personal information stored by us. Contributions are typically not subject to this clause, as they are governed by the Creative Commons license contract under which you submitted the data. In particular, you should be aware that the license we use requires that we provide attributions of the author of the content.

In order to make any of these requests, please contact us at [email protected].

    8. Security notifications

You have the right to be notified of any security breach we suffer that exposes your personal information. We will make public disclosures of security breaches that we uncover on the Wiki. If it is likely that your information has been exposed, and you have provided us with your email, we will send email notifications about the breach to you.

    9. Changes to this Privacy Policy

    9.1 Substantial changes

In the event of substantial changes, we will provide the proposed changes to our users for an open comment period lasting at least 15 calendar days. After the changes come into effect, users of the Wiki will be notified.

    9.2 Minor changes

For minor changes such as grammatical or orthographical fixes, administrative or legal changes, or corrections of inaccurate statements, we will post the changes without an open comment period. If possible and necessary, we will provide at least 3 calendar days' notice via our Discord server.

9.3 Acceptance of changes to the Policy

By continuing to use the Wiki after any changes have been posted and announced, you accept any modifications to the Policy.

    10. Disclaimer

Although the Nonbinary Wiki Project puts forth a committed effort to safeguard the security of the limited user information collected and retained on our servers, determined third parties may still develop methods to uncover such information and disclose it. For this reason, we can make no guarantee against unauthorized access to information provided in the course of using the Wiki.

The Project does not maintain individual contracts with the third parties to whom personal information may be transmitted. Furthermore, as an all-volunteer organization, we lack the resources to conduct formal legal reviews of policy documents published by said third parties. Therefore, we can make no guarantee against unintended harm caused by a third party's uses of data we share, nor against policy breaches by individuals with access, authorized or unauthorized, to private information.
