    "Category" vs "Parent category"

Decided to go with "See also" and putting the category icon next to each category instead. Also, not linking to Category:Main

Recently @Ondo: changed the "Category" link to "Parent category" in Template:Identities. I had labeled that section "Category" to match the way categories are listed at the bottom of articles. Is that confusing though? If so, we should update all the category templates so that they're consistent.

Hi! Yes sorry, I forgot to mention the reason. "Category" seemed confusing to me, because the category of that page would be "Identities" (or "People", etc.). But that section is used for the category of the category, i.e. the parent category. What do you think?

And yes, of course, there should be consistency.

    No worries!

That makes sense. My concern is that calling it "Parent categories" doesn't feel distinct enough from "Subcategories" to warrent being the bottom list instead of just another group. What do you think of calling it something like "See also" and then using the category icon next to each parent category instead of next to the list label?

I like "See also", we can go with that. That said, I'd avoid linking to the "Main" category. It has a confusing name (it's not meant to be linked to directly anywhere, and it shouldn't have pages directly categorized under it), so I'd have that only for those category that have a parent category with a more specific purpose. Linking to "Main" might as well link to the wiki's main page. Thoughts?

I think that's fair. I linked to main because I wanted readers to be able to explore more categories if they've exausted the tree they were in, but I think linking to the main page is a better solution. --u9000 (they/them • talk) 15:19, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
