Internalised enbyphobia

Internalised enbyphobia is a type of transphobia that occurs when a non binary person internalises the negative attitudes towards non binary people expressed by society. It comes from the abbreviation enby (from NB) and phobia, meaning fear of. It can have devastating effects on the person’s self esteem and self image, leading to self loathing and outward discrimination toward other non binary people.

Internalised enbyphobia is not widely discussed outside of social media and forums. There is little to no data on internalised enbyphobia and shame in non binary people.
