Xenogender

This page is about a gender identity that is not widely used among gender-variant people. This does not mean that the identity is not valid, but that very few people are known to use this term. More information on uncommon identities...

Xenogender (coined by Baaphomett in 2014, from xeno alien + "gender") is a nonbinary gender identity "that cannot be contained by human understandings of gender; more concerned with crafting other methods of gender categorization and hierarchy such as those relating to animals, plants, or other creatures/things." Xenogender isn't defined in relation to "female" or "male" (the binary genders), but by other kinds of ideas that most people don't think of as having to do with gender. When people talk about nonbinary gender, they often find that there aren't any words for their experiences. This is called a lexical gap. In order to fill a lexical gap, this wiki takes up "xenogender" as an umbrella term for an entire category of nonbinary genders that are defined by characteristics with no relation whatsoever to "female" or "male."

Because a gender binary society doesn't give much in the way of roles or descriptions for nonbinary genders, some transgender and gender nonconforming people address the challenge of describing their unusual gender identities by creative methods, referring to concepts that aren't usually seen as related to gender. This has been observed in very young nonbinary people:

"Not all children fit neatly into a male or female gender identity, trans or otherwise. For some children, the sense of being 'both' or 'neither' best describes their reality. [...] Children who see themselves as 'neither' will often speak of how regardless of whether they're with a group of boys or girls, they feel like they don’t fit. This is not necessarily a sad feeling. They just see the kids around them and know that they are not 'that.' Kids in this category often appear androgynous, and will frequently answer the question 'are you a boy or a girl' by saying their name ('I'm Devon') or by identifying themselves as animals. When asked to draw self portraits, they will portray themselves as rainbows, or unicorns, or another symbol of their choosing."

These creative methods of describing nonbinary genders come naturally to many nonbinary people. As such, these are an emerging part of nonbinary culture, worthy of exploration and examination. Some common themes of these concepts:

Nouns and archetypes: Some nonbinary people find it easier to perceive or describe their inner sense of their gender identity by evoking familiar archetypes. Instead of giving references to how their gender relates to maleness and femaleness, they say their gender is-- or is like-- a kind of animal, an imaginary being, a part of nature, an abstract concept, or a symbol. Some nonbinary people describing their gender this way do so because they feel a sense of gender euphoria or some other connection when thinking about an object. Some people have made names for some of these kinds of noungenders, such as arithmogender, faunagender, and gendersea (see below).

Synaesthetic perceptions: Synaesthesia is an uncommon condition in which people have their senses linked together, so that, say, sounds and words bring up specific colors in their minds. Some nonbinary people find it feels more natural to perceive or describe their inner sense of their gender identity in terms of synaesthesia-like perceptions. For example, texture, size, shape, time, light, sound, or other sensory characteristics that most people don't attribute to gender at all. Some people have made names for some of these kinds of genders, such as archaigender, cosmicgender, and frostgender (see below).

Neurodiversity: Some nonbinary people have mental variations (mental illnesses, neurological conditions, or neurodivergence). Some who have mental variations see these as an influence on-- or an inseparable part of-- their gender identity. These are called neurogenders, and most of them are not described on this page, but on the neurogender page.

Aethergender

Aethergender, Æthergender, or Ethergender: Coined by royalgummi. A gender that feels very wide, commanding, breathtaking and powerful. Can be combined with relevant genders.

Aliengender

Aliengender: Coined by genderghoul. "A gender that is an interpretation of a gender or genders, from a nonhuman perspective. may or may not like to fit into a gender and adopt a gender, but in a sort of ‘alien trying out foreign species’s gender’ way. Can be combined with relevant genders."

Archaicgender

Archaicgender, Archaigender, or Historiagender: Coined by irredeemablegoety and completelynormalscientist. "A gender that stretches far beyond one’s own age or lifetime. The vast-age of this gender has allowed it to grow far beyond whatever size/presence one would expect, or perhaps to shrink down and almost be forgotten." Ariegender

Ariegender: Coined by anonymous. "A gender that makes the person feel somewhat out of control because their gender identity is taking control of their life. Based on the zodiac sign Aries."

Arithmogender

Blizzgender

Boggender

Boggender or Swampgender: A gender that feels like, or can be compared to a bog, swamp, marsh or similar. (Coined by anonymous).

Caelgender

Caelgender: A gender which shares qualities with outer space or has the aesthetic of space, stars, nebulae, etc. (Coined by transmomoi).

Caminus gender

Caminus gender A gender where one feels a strong warmth and a strong connection to multiple genders (at least two) or none at all and a strong identification with a feeling of warmth.The word caminus is Latin for oven, with metaphorically represents the feeling of warmth they feel inside.

Canisgender

Canisgender, Canidaegender, or Canigender: A gender that feels influenced by, or connected to dogs in some way.

Carmigender

Carmigender: A gender that feels poetic or rhythmic in nature. May be used as a prefix (carmifluid, carmiboy, etc.) or as a standalone gender.

Cengender

Cengender: "A gender that can be summed up as an unidentifiable thing but manifests as hundreds of different genders or non at all at any given time at the same time and/or separately. Fluid and ever changing." (Coined by small-enby).

Chaosgender

Chaosgender: When your gender does lots of confusing things and doesn't make sense to anyone. (Coined by ihatecispeople).

Circgender

Circgender: A gender that feels so magical and grand you can’t describe it. named after Circe, goddess of magic. (Coined by anonymous).

Colorgender

Colorgender: A gender associated with one or more colors and the feelings, hues, emotions, and/or objects associated with that color. Can be used like pinkgender, violetgender, etc.

Contigender

Contigender: "1. a gender that flows through space and time and constantly changes, always moving 2. a gender of or related to space and time. this gender can be used by itself or along with another gender to describe its state of movement e.g. a conti agender or a contigender demigirl." Cosmicgender

Cosmicgender (coined by dragon-friker) is defined as "A gender so vast and complex that you are only able to process a small bit of it at a time. Like viewing the night sky through a telescope, you cannot hope to see all of it at once, however, you may gain more knowledge about parts of it the longer you focus on one part. May contain any number of sub genders within it that may present themselves to you. It is infinite in its possibility. Name from the vast reaches of space filled with things we cannot begin to imagine."

Cryptogender

Cryptogender, Gendercryptic: "A gender one can’t discern, describe or define in human words. a gender one is puzzled by and can’t put a finger on, as it feels like it is and it isn’t there without following any particular pattern, sometimes even at the same time. the impenetrability, ambiguity and uncertainty that surround this gender are vaguely reminiscing of cryptids, ghouls and the paranormal." Daimogender

Daimogender: When you feel your gender is closely related to demons or the supernatural. this is not exclusively for demonkin, though if anyone uses it, i would like them to be involved in supernatural things. a person does not require dysphoria to be daimogender. “Daimo” comes from the word “daimon,” which was the original greek word for “demon.”

Delphigender

Delphigender or Mystigender: A mysterious, mystical and obscure non-binary gender. (Coined by genderlord).

Digigender

Digigender flag created by Kiloueka. The flag design was created to aesthetically represent the gender. The blues were chosen because they are the colors associated with the internet or anything digital. The binary code spells out Digigender.

Digigender. Coined by furryhell. "a digital gender. it can range from any digital thing or file; virus, malware, .txt, .mp3, anti-virus, trojan, email, etc. gender can be replaced with girl, xirl, nonbinary, nb, enby, fluid, boy, boi, etc."

Donumgender

Donumgender: A gender that you have been reincarnated as as a reward given by a deity for good deeds in your past life. Your gender itself is a gift given to you, something to be treasured. (note: donumgender can be for any gender, for example, a deity granting you the ability to shift through genders rapidly as a secogender would be considered a donumgender if you feel that it is a gift, so you would be both secogender and donumgender).

Dryagender

Dryagender: A form of agender but with more of a connection to an empty forest. (In reference to the Greek nymphs). (Coined by maromoroney).

Dulcigender

Dulcigender: An aesthetically-centered gender that is associated largely with stereotypically feminine things (such as pinks, frills, buns, and general cute things). (Coined by transmomoi).

Earthgender

Earthgender: “A gender identity that is directly affected, tied to, or influenced by the earth or nature. or; a gender identity similar to/the same as that of some form of earth deity. Note: this gender identity is not to be used by duotheistic pagans or wiccans, because of the general consensus in those faiths that the earth deity being worshiped (mother earth) is a female. it can be used by non-duotheistic pagans, non-wiccans, and non-pagan otherkin whose kintypes are nature-based (naturekin, forestkin, faekin, plantkin etc).” (Coined by anonymous).

Effreu

Effreu: From French effrayant "scary" + neutre "neutral," A scary non-binary gender. "It is a [non-binary] gender, may be paired with agender and other genders." (Coined by angeligender.) Keywords: emotion, fear, scary

Egogender

Egogender or Charagender: (Coined by queerspike and flynneleh).

Egoisgender: "An egotistical gender, much like narkissisgender but generally it’s not as ‘intense’ as narkissisgender is so to speak. it can be used by anyone. gender can be replaced with boi, xirl, nonbinary, fluid, etc." (Coined by furryhell). The synonym of this word that can only be used by people who have narcissistic personality disorder is narkissisgender.

Ekragender

Ekragender: A gender you have blown up into a million pieces or destroyed by detonating or wish you could. Prefix from the Greek word εκραγεί meaning “explode.” (Coined by gyey).

Elementgender

Elementgender: Where your gender consists of four primary parts that respectively feel linked to each element. (Coined by anonymous).

Energender

Energender: A gender that seems to be like a ball of energy, shifting and moving rapidly and not being able to be quite pinned down, though its basic components are somewhat known, such as being partially female, partially male, partially anything really, but there being more core genders that are harder to pin down. Can be used in ways like Energender girl, Energender boy, Energender nb, etc. (Coined by anoddlittleplace).

Espigender

Espigender: A gender which is related to being a spirit or exists on higher or extra dimensional planes.

Ethegender

Ethegender, Delicagender, Daingender, Ethereagender, or Elegender: A gender up to interpretation by individuals, but in essence is an ethereal gender that is unable to be understood by either the individual or others; a gender that cannot be explained; a dainty, elegant, or delicate gender. Faunagender

Faunagender: "A gender influenced by animals." (Coined by nooklicker). Keywords: animals, nature, beings

Fawngender

Fawngender or Deergender: A gender that is explored through timidity and caution, but blossoms into something natural and cute. (Coined by forteh).

Felidaegender

Felidaegender, Feligender, Felisgender, or Felinegender: "A gender corresponding to cats. When you feel fuzzy, and fluffy, and really want your chin scratched." (Coined by gluskinner).

Firegender

Firegender: A fluid gender that permits the user to generate small flames within a 6 meter radius. Aesthetically linked to fire as a visual metaphor or symbol. (Coined by hotboi).

Flirtgender

Flirtgender, Amogender, or Genderamas: A gender identity where one’s feelings of gender are experienced through flirtiness. This can be through flirting with people or the word in general, or though flirting with gender itself. (Coined by fluiditylife).

Heliogender

Namegender

(Name)gender: "A gender that is best described by one’s name, good for those who aren’t sure what they identify as yet but definitely know that they aren’t cis [cisgender]. it can be used as a catch-all term or a specific identifier, e.g. johngender, janegender, (your name here)gender, etc." (Coined by anonymous). Necrogender

Necrogender: A gender that used to exist but is now 'dead' or nonexistent. (Coined by Baaphomett).

Noungender

Noungender: "A gender that's best described by a noun, particularly good for synasthetic people. eg: seagender, a gender best described by the sea. Very flexible and personable." An umbrella term. (Coined by branacle).

Numbergender

Numbergender: "A gender relating to those who identify themselves as a number or mathematical equation. can also be a gender that revolves around all numbers in general. theres negative and positive numbergenders, and anything mathematical. Nyctogender

Nyctogender: "A gender consisting of pure darkness or related to it." (Coined by wynter-caelum). Keywords: light, dark, abstract, symbols

Orbgender

Orbgender: A gender which feels round, without any edges.

Preciogender

Preciogender or Precique: A gender which feels special and precious to you.

Seagender

Seagender: A gender that is as deep and unknown as the ocean itself. It’s a gender that is mostly incomprehensible but slightly familiar in human terms. Not to be confused with Gendersea.

Stargender

Stargender: "An otherworldly gender that is beyond comprehension in earthly terms, as if it originated from beyond the earth. OR a gender that cannot be defined no matter how many other terms are coined OR simply the gender of a star."

Staticgender

Staticgender: A gender which can best be described as TV static; fuzzy and incomprehensible.

Stratogender

Stratogender: A gender that has various layers, created with sky/cloudkin in mind but can be used by anyone.

Wintgender

Wintgender, Wintegender, or Wintergender. (Coined by asperdemigirl in 2014). Similar to blizzgender, but it encompasses a second gender. A winteboy might experience both a cold, harsh, and snowy gender, but also being male or have some connection to masculinity, for example.

Witchgender

Witchgender, Magusgender, Magegender, or Venefigender: A gender that has a closeness or connection to witchcraft and magic. It is, in a way, a magic gender. You could use it to perform strange gender magic. Or something. It is also associated with a feminine or androgynous gender expression. Not to be confused with Genderwitched.
